ECN, together with its partners, invites you to the workshop
Advanced biomass upgrading
This workshop is organised in the framework of the EU FP7 project Logistics for Energy Crops Biomass (LogistEC), in close collaboration with EERA Bioenergy.
Purpose of the workshop
The workshop aims at establishing the state-of-the-art in biomass upgrading and identifying future R&D needs. To this purpose, the workshop will start with presenting results from the LogistEC project, where the potential of dry and wet torrefaction to improve logistic chains has been assessed, e.g., through extensive bench-scale and pilot-scale testing. These results then are placed in a wider perspective by giving an overview of the findings of two other large EU projects on biomass upgrading, viz. SECTOR (focus on dry torrefaction) and BioBoost (focus on pyrolysis and hydrothermal treatment). This will then be followed by a discussion to identify R&D needs (leading to a strategic R&D agenda) and funding possibilities.
The outcome of the workshop will be used to influence the EU R&D agenda and develop joint project initiatives, e.g. through EERA Bioenergy.

(*) Description of facilities at ECN
ECN develops and commercialises dry torrefaction, wet torrefaction (TORWASH) and pyrolysis technologies together with industrial partners. ECN has facilities ranging from lab to pilot scale, and developed an extensive array of characterisation methods. The tour will include visits to the dry and wet torrefaction facilities, the pyrolysis test equipment, the MILENA gasification test rigs and finally the combustion lab.
The European Energy Research Alliance (EERA), one of the instruments in the EU SET-plan, is a pan-European effort of the major European R&D organisations to align their R&D activities in the field of Sustainable Energy Technology. EERA Bioenergy is one of the EERA joint programmes, with 34 participating European R&D organisations from 15 countries, dedicated to the development of value chains for the production of nextgen biofuels and power from biomass. EERA Bioenergy focuses on joint strategies and joint research project proposals through aligning precompetitive research activities, exploring joint technology development, establishing large research infrastructures, promoting human mobility and providing promotion and dissemination.
The workshop will be held on Wednesday 12 November 2014 at the ECN site at the following address.
